 Dr. Gerilyn M. Alfe majored in English at Tufts University,
where she graduated cum laude in 1989. She then attended
Tufts School of Dental Medicine, graduating in 1993.
Dr. Alfe was 5th in her class and was awarded magna
cum laude status. She was also awarded the AAWD Certificate
of Recognition and the Jack Frommer Prize in the
Morphological
Sciences.
Dr. Alfe was inducted in the Omicron Kappa
Upsilon Dental Honor Society (awarded to only 10%
of the graduating class.)
Dr. Alfe has always been, and continues to be,
involved with continuing education. Her experiences
in this area include:
- Clinical Instructor, Tufts University
School of Dental Medicine
- Clinical Instructor with PAC~live (1999-2002),
an interactive, hands-on program teaching dentists
worldwide how to perform smile designs (extreme
makeovers), full mouth rehabilitations (restoration
of severely worn teeth), and occlusal (bite)
treatment
- Clinical Instructor, The HornbrookGroup (2002
to present)
- Dr. Alfe has completed advanced training and continuing
education in anxiolytic dentistry (anxiety
reduction) and permanent/removable orthodontics
- Dr. Alfe also lectures nationally on many subjects
including, cosmetic dentistry, bite relationships,
treatment planning, bonding (tooth-colored
fillings), and Tekscan analysis
- Dr. Alfe has published numerous articles for
many professional dental publications

Ok, so Dr. Alfe is really smart…but is she
nice?
Yes! By the second grade, Dr. Alfe knew she wanted
to be a dentist. She
had a wonderful family dentist and all of her dental
experiences were pleasant…yes,
pleasant! So,
Dr. Alfe vowed to become a dentist that makes people
smile, in more ways than one.
How in the world does she make her patients actually
enjoy going to the dentist?
First, Dr. Alfe just listens. And while she’s
listening to you, she puts you at ease immediately
(really, she just has that certain quality!) And
then she begins to inspire an enormous amount of
trust because, behind her compassion and warmth,
you get glimpses of this incredible body of knowledge
and experience. But Dr. Alfe won’t overwhelm
you with too many of the technical details (unless
you happen to enjoy the science behind dentistry.)
What she will do is provide you with honest and
uncompromising solutions, designed to meet your
unique needs.

In her spare time, Dr. Alfe burns off some extra energy by strength training, Spinning and practicing Pilates. Before she opened Chicago Smile Spa, she was a certified instructor for both Spinning and YogaFit, in addition to practicing dentistry, of course! During good (and not-so-good) weather, she can be seen running along the lake. In June 2007, she participated in Avon’s Two-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. She loves working and living in Lincoln Park and enjoys all that this wonderful neighborhood has to offer. When she wants to spend some quiet time, she delves into a good book, usually a mystery or biography.

And Rima - Dr. Alfe's Hygienist
Chicago Smile Spa is very excited to welcome our newest team member, Rima. Rima joined us on June 9, 2008 and brings 18 years of dental experience with her. The first 14 years she was a chairside dental assistant. 4 years ago, Rima became a licensed dental hygienist. Her wealth of experience and her philosophy regarding oral healthcare make her a perfect match with our team. As a bonus, all of that comes with an amazing personality and a caring, warm chairside manner! Rima’s previous experience includes working with The HornbrookGroup, which is the same group that Dr. Alfe teaches with.
As of June 16th, Rima will be taking care of all your hygiene needs. Rima is certified in local anesthesia and laser treatment for soft tissue management. Moving forward, we will be able to offer local delivery of antibiotics to assist patients with their periodontal conditions as needed. She will also be the primary caregiver during NTI, Invisalign and AcquaBrite impressions, delivery of NTIs and Invisalign aligners, and administration of AcquaBrite in office whitening as of right now. Whenever Rima is not performing hygiene, she will be chairside assisting Dr. Alfe during restorative dental appointments.
So where did she get all her training and experience? Rima attended Northern Illinois University for her bachelor’s degree where she studied French language and literature. She spent eight months studying in Avignon, France. She was fortunate enough to travel all over Europe and North Africa during her semester abroad. Her plan was to teach French, but the dental world had a hold on her.
She later went back to school to study dental hygiene. Rima attended Harper College, where she maintained a 4.0 within the hygiene program. She received an academic excellence award and was admitted into Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society. Soon after being licensed to practice hygiene, Rima wanted to do volunteer work. Rima went to Haiti on a dental mission in 2006. Rima and four other dental volunteers spent a week in Cap Haitian, Haiti. They set up a clinic at a local church. They had sporadic electricity from a generator and bare minimum supplies. Initially, the experience was frustrating because of limitations, but the smiling faces of the 150 patients whom she helped made it a life changing experience.
During her free time, Rima likes to take advantage of everything the city has to offer. Rima loves to ride her bike or walk along the lakefront. She also likes to go to the different neighborhood festivals in the area. She recently received certification for scuba diving and has her sights set on sky diving!
