Knowing what is causing your disease is the first step in knowing how to treat it. OralDNA® labs provide Dr. Alfe with an easy and quick way to test you for your risk factors for periodontal disease and oral cancer.
MyPerioPath® and MyPerioID® PST® are salivary DNA tests that determine the cause of periodontal infections and also your increased risk for severe periodontal infections. Periodontal disease is often hereditary. If your parents have experienced tooth loss or have endured gum surgery, you may be at greater risk for periodontal disease as well. Periodontal disease is often a silent villain. Patients rarely experience pain until it’s too late. Knowing if you are at risk allows you to be proactive in your care, often avoiding gum surgery, tooth loss and other systemic diseases that have been linked to gum disease (heart attacks, stroke, and low birth weight babies, just to name a few). Using laser treatments, along with PerioProtect® and gentle ultrasonic scaling, Dr. Alfe is helping her patients comfortaly and affordably improve their oral and general health and keep their teeth.
OraRisk® HPV is a salivary DNA test that determines who is at risk for HPV-related oral cancers. The Human PapillomaVirus (HPV) is one of the most common virus groups in the world.
There are a few specific strains of HPV that are considered serious risk factors for oral cancer. You may have been exposed to HPV without knowing it, as it has no signs or symptoms, unlike herpes or other STDs. HPV-related oral cancers are the fastest growing population of oral cancers and are changing the face of oral cancer victims. Women in their 30’s are now the fastest growing group of oral cancer victims. Changes in sexual practices are a contributing factor. During Michael Douglas’s oral cancer diagnosis, HPV was found to be a contributing factor. Dr. Alfe spoke about this when she was interviewed by Fox Chicago Morning News in 2010.
All of the tests are quick, simple, and painless. Dr. Alfe has her patients swish a sterile saline solution for 30 seconds and then spit into a funneled collection tube which is sent to the OralDNA® labs. Test results are usually received within a week. Once a diagnosis has been made, Dr. Alfe can devise a treatment plan for you to help treat and control your disease and risk factors.
